Enno Patalas (1929-2018)

Enno Patalas at the 1979 FIAF Congress in Lausanne. FIAF/Eva Orbanz

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our German colleague Enno Patalas on 8 August 2018. An eminent film critic (he was editor of the German journal Filmkritik from 1957 to 1971), but also film archivist and curator (he was the director of the Munich Film Museum – Filmmuseum München – from 1973 to 1994), he restored many German (and other) classics of the silent era (from Metropolis to Battleship Potemkin) and greatly influenced a whole new generation of film archivists and restorers. In 1991 he received the Jean Mitry Award in recognition of «activities in safeguarding and prizing the cinematographic patrimony» from the Giornate de Cinema Muto in Pordenone.

As a small tribute to Enno Patalas, FIAF gives you access to a text by Patalas on his experience as a film restorer, published in the Journal of Film Preservation (#56, June 1998).
