Panel 2 - Opposing the Current: Transnational Collaboration as a Mutual Learning Tool

Bangkok, 23 April 2024

Film archives in the Global South face significant challenges such as unreliable electricity, lack of training, censorship, resource scarcity, and political instability. These archives often rely on Western support, which can perpetuate old power dynamics and hinder the visibility of films from the Global South in Western-dominated film history. Three archivists discuss their unique struggles: Astone Danjuma in Nigeria, Lisabona Rahman in Indonesia, and Stefanie Schulte Strathaus in Berlin. Their experiences highlight the need for transnational collaboration to expand and collectively rewrite film history, challenging cultural hegemony and traditional archiving paradigms.

Moderator : Cecilia Cenciarelli (Il CInema Ritrovato Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna)
