Statement issued by FIAF about the current events in Ecuador affecting the Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella'
It is with huge concern that the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and 172 non-profit film heritage institutions affiliated to this global network, have heard of the deeply worrying situation faced by the Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella', our long-time affiliate in Ecuador, over the last few days.
An institution such as the Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella' can only fulfil its core missions of collecting, safeguarding, and sharing Ecuador’s rich moving image heritage to the highest international standards if it is allowed to operate in a stable and supportive environment by its government, and is treated with the respect it deserves. The highly skilled and passionate professionals working for Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella' are the true custodians of this unique heritage. They keep the memory of the Ecuadorian nation and its diverse communities alive, and as such their work must be recognized and valued by the public authorities. Any policing measures that violate the Cinemateca’s autonomy and the integrity of its premises and collections, and undermine or intimidate its staff, directly threaten the country’s cultural heritage, and potentially deprive future generations of Ecuadorians of connecting with their artistic and cultural past.
FIAF and its 172 other affiliated film archives in 79 countries stand strongly with their colleagues in Quito, and urge the Ecuadorian government to do whatever it takes to ensure that this highly respected institution can continue to operate professionally and independently and carry out its essential cultural missions as it has done so brilliantly for so many years.

La Federación Internacional de Archivos Fílmicos (FIAF) y 172 instituciones de patrimonio cinematográfico sin ánimo de lucro afiliadas a esta red mundial, han tenido conocimiento de la situación profundamente preocupante a la que se enfrenta la Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella', nuestra afiliada desde hace tiempo en Ecuador, en los últimos días.
Una institución como la Cinemateca Nacional 'Ulises Estrella' sólo puede cumplir su misión principal de recopilar, salvaguardar y compartir el rico patrimonio de imágenes en movimiento de Ecuador con los más altos estándares internacionales si su gobierno le permite operar en un entorno estable y de apoyo, y si se le trata con el respeto que merece. Los profesionales altamente cualificados y apasionados que trabajan en la Cinemateca Nacional "Ulises Estrella" son los verdaderos guardianes de este patrimonio único. Mantienen viva la memoria de la nación ecuatoriana y de sus diversas comunidades, y como tal su trabajo debe ser reconocido y valorado por las autoridades públicas. Cualquier medida policial que viole la autonomía de la Cinemateca y la integridad de sus instalaciones y colecciones, y que socave o intimide a su personal, amenaza directamente el patrimonio cultural del país, y potencialmente priva a las futuras generaciones de ecuatorianos de conectarse con su pasado artístico y cultural.
La FIAF y sus otros 172 archivos fílmicos afiliados en 79 países apoyan firmemente a sus colegas en Quito, e instan al gobierno ecuatoriano a hacer lo que sea necesario para garantizar que esta institución tan respetada pueda seguir operando de manera profesional e independiente y llevar a cabo sus misiones culturales esenciales como lo ha hecho de manera brillante durante tantos años.
