2017 FIAF/CF Winter School on Programming - REGISTRATIONS NOW CLOSED
The Nordic Film Archives and Cinematheques had their annual meeting in Iceland on 14 and 15 September. Here is a short report of the meeting.
New, improved version of the Manual now available
Head of the FIAF Technical Commission David Walsh has been appointed FIAF Training & Outreach Coordinator for the next 15 months.
Ib Monty, FIAF Honorary Member and former director of the Danish Filmmuseum (1960-1997), passed away on 29 July 2016 at the age of 85.
FIAF is invitating applications for the new position of FIAF Training and Outreach Coordinator (16-month freelance contract starting in September 2016, 60 days a year). The closing date for applications is 12 August 2016.
On 26 June, Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne received the 15th FIAF Award at a special ceremony in the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, during the 72nd FIAF Congress.
The FIAF General Assembly on 23-24 June in Bologna was attended by 114 FIAF-affiliated institutions represented by 256 delegates. Three new institutions were admitted as FIAF Associates.
FIAF’s Periodicals Indexing Project (P.I.P.) has now officially started indexing electronic journals. To enable the P.I.P. to cope with the additional workload, we are looking for qualified free-lance indexers to help with the indexing of online film journals.
The two-day Conference (1-3 June 2016, Dublin), supported by the Coordinating Council for Audiovisual Archive Associations (CCAAA), will highlight the single most important issue facing the audiovisual archive world today: saving the endangered audiovisual archive heritage of the world before it is too late! Early-bird registration closes on 13 May.
It is with great sadness that the Cinémathèque suisse and FIAF announce the death on Sunday morning, at the age of 70, of Christian Dimitriu, former assistant director of the Cinémathèque suisse (1981 to 1992), then Senior Administrator of FIAF (1995 to 2011).

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of PK Nair, former director of the National Film Archive of India until his retirement in 1991, and a member of the FIAF Executive Committee in the 1980s.
Call for Proposals (in Spanish only) for a forthcoming workshop on the cataloguing of film materials with RDA and FIAF rules in Mexico City
The theme of this year’s Conference, which ill take place from 6-11 June 2016 in Guam, will be “Intellectual Property, Rights, and Audiovisual Archives: Reframing Boundaries and Possibilities”. You can find the call for papers HERE. The deadline for the submission of proposals is 31 March 2016.
After a careful assessment of all the applications received, FIAF has awarded five scholarships to students from Indian and Bangladesh: Mr. Md. Rashedul Alam Gazi; Ms. Shruti Narayanswamy; Mr. Sachin Sharma; Ms. Vinita Negi; Ms. Ritika Popli.
Appointed in October 2015 for a five-year term, Ms. Anna Sienkiewicz-Rogowska took up her position as Director of the Filmoteka Narodowa (Warsaw), where she succeeds Prof. Tadeusz Kowalski, on 20 November.
Kinoteka na Makedonija (Cinematheque of Macedonia) recently went through some changes in the management team, which resulted in appointment of a new director.
Film Preservation & Restoration Workshop India 2016:
On 15-16 November, the FIAF Executive Committee members are meeting in Los Angeles for their autumn 2015 meeting. The Academy Film Archive is hosting the 2-day meeting in its offices on Vine Street, Hollywood.
On 14 November, FIAF launched its new website, which is more user-friendly in its browsing experience, has redistributed the layout of major sections (and has added a new History section), and gives access to a variety of new tools and documents.
Filmoteca de la UNAM will host an "Escuela sobre ruedas" (School-on-wheels) from 23 November to 4 December 2015 in Mexico, as part of the CLAIM/FIAF/Ibermedia programme for Latin American film archivists.The course will be in Spanish. The full programme (in Spanish) can be found HERE.
Rajendra Roy of The Museum of Modern Art's Department announces the retirement of MoMA's Charles Silver.
Staff at EYE are working round the clock to prepare the collection for transfer to EYE’s new Collection Centre on 26, Asterweg in North Amsterdam on 1 January 2016.
On 29-30 October, IWM London and lecturers David Walsh and John Reed welcomed the 18 students of the latest technical training organised by the FIAF Technical Commission. The 2015 FIAF Award was presented to Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi by FIAF President Eric Le Roy on Monday 28 September 2015, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where a full retrospective of their work is currently being shown.
The Cinémathèque de Grenoble has announced that its founder and first President, Michel Warren, passed away on 28 July 2015 in Menton (France).
We heard the sad news of the passing of Gilberto Santeiro, Curator of Cinemateca do MAM in Rio de Janeiro, on 30 April.

Lia van Leer, founder of the Jerusalem Cinematheque / Israel Film Archive, died on 13 March at the age of 90.
As part of an initiative to address the increasing scarcity of people with film archiving skills, FIAF has run a pilot training course ‘Technical Training for Film Archivists’ devised by the FIAF Technical Commission. This took place in Istanbul, Turkey, on 20-21 February 2015.
Our colleague Vladimir Opela of the Czech National Film Archive received the FOCAL International Lifetime Achievement Award in London on 30 April.
Registrations are now open for this two-week training event in Accra, Ghana (9-23 July 2017).
