 Technical Training for Film Archivists (Imperial War Museum, London)

Date: 29-30 October 2015 (two full days)

Aims of the course

This course will address all aspects of technology that are relevant to the management of a film archive in the modern world. It will cover film technology from its inception to the present day, along with a brief overview of video and television technology. It will also cover digital technology and its application in film archives, in particular digitisation, digital acquisition and preservation.

Who should attend

The course is aimed at archive curators who need a comprehensive grounding in the technology of film, its relevance to film archive holdings and how the preservation and digitisation of this content is managed. The course will also be valuable for existing film technicians in need of a solid introduction to digital technology. Please note that the course will be in English. It will be classroom-based, with some brief practical exercises.

Topics covered

 - History of Film Technology

Including early film formats, colour, sound, formats, production routes, editing and identification.

 - History of TV and Video Technology

Including early TV production, the development of magnetic recording, video formats, aspect ratios, TV production routes, identification.

 - Preservation of Film and Video

Including preservation strategies, nitrate, acetate and colour preservation, repair, laboratory work, videotape.

 - Digital Technology and Digitisation

Including the rudiments of digital technology, digital images and film, audio, file formats and compression, digitising film.

 - Management and Preservation of Digital Material

The OAIS, acquisition and ingest, archival storage, access, practicalities and problems.


Lecturers

David Walsh, Head of the FIAF Technical Commission and Head of Digital Collections at IWM.

John Reed, former Preservation Officer at the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales.

Location

The training will take place at IWM (Imperial War Museums) in London.

Cost

The cost will be 95 Euros per person for staff members of FIAF-affiliated institutions. The price includes a cold lunch on both days. There will be a self-funded evening meal in a restaurant at the end of the first day. Participants are expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements, but a list of nearby hotels and travel information will be made available.

Please note that the registration deadline is 15 September 2015, so make sure you return the form to the FIAF Secretariat by that date. Please note that this course can only accommodate 20 students maximum. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, and will only be confirmed once the payment had been made.
