About the FIAF Training and Outreach Program

The FIAF Training and Outreach Program has been established in order to formally and consistently continue the work FIAF has done in the field of training and support for decades through past or current programs (the TC training initiative, the FIAF Bologna Film Restoration Summer School, the Schools on Wheels, the Reel Emergency).

The program is established to meet the identified worldwide needs for education and training in the areas of film and moving image archiving, management, preservation, digitization and exhibition from countries to acquire professional training are:

 

  • Technical training (traditional film, video and digital) for the world’s archives, museums, libraries and governments responsible for these holdings;
  • Comprehensive preservation and archival training for archivists and future archivists;
  • Other related training (for instance cataloguing, documentation, programming) for other film archive/cinematheque professionals;
  • Broad archival training for struggling archives in challenged regions;
  • Archival basics and education for organizations and countries who need to set up archives;
  • Basic archival film and moving image equipment and supplies;
  • Emergency support for collections in immediate danger of disposal or irrevocable harm;
  • Support for any archive faced with dramatic budget cuts.

 

About the Training and Outreach Coordinator Position

A. Primary Role

 The Training and Outreach Coordinator will be expected to:

 

  • Design a comprehensive FIAF International Outreach and Training curriculum program (with different facets meeting the different scenarios listed above)
  • Develop criteria to evaluate and select the archives and organizations with greatest needs (who to assist)
  • Launch a FIAF International Outreach and Training Program that can be sustained and meet some of the current needs with teams of trainers;
  • Secure additional funding to support the program;
  • Begin on-site visits to evaluate needs for archives requesting guidance and support;
  • Coordinate and manage the first training/outreach projects of the Program.


B. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

Administrative

  • Manage projects and outreach programs working with host facilities
  • Represent FIAF for outreach efforts to countries in need
  • Evaluate needs of archives at risk/ or needs of countries without proper archives
  • Identify and secure funding for ongoing FIAF training and outreach program
  • Begin on-site, evaluative visits to requesting archives

 

Course Development and Teaching

  • Devise and develop training events
  • Develop curriculum for different modules
  • Teach a variety of programs
  • Recruit, train, schedule and manage other teachers, and liaise with their institution when required
  • Provide ongoing training and mentorship to trainers

 

Supervision and Training

  • Recruit, train, schedule and manage other teachers
  • Provide ongoing training and mentorship to trainers


Archival Practices

  • Assist with the evaluation and condition of materials held in trainee host locations
  • Maintain archival conditions for the materials in its care
  • Respect and safeguard the integrity of the material in the care of trainers and protect it
    from any forms of manipulation, mutilation, or censorship
  • Maintain the FIAF Code of Ethics and ensure that trainers work within that code


Research, Evaluation and Coordination

  • Research ongoing issues in the field
  • Evaluate ongoing programs
  • Coordinate with other international training and outreach initiatives

 

C. Qualifications and Experience

Minimum education: Degree in moving image archiving and preservation program or equivalent of minimum of five years’ experience working in the field.

The minimum years of applicable and relevant work experience that would be necessary to effectively perform in the position:

Two years required, five years preferred experience with: motion picture film handling, knowledge and history of video formats; teaching; curriculum development; knowledge of playback equipment; understanding of digital technologies; experience working across multi-cultural areas.


Prefer experience in/with: administrative and supervisory capacity; an archive or facility handling archival moving image material and knowledge of archival practices; teaching. Fundraising experience.


Language skill requirements (please note that the official FIAF languages are English, Spanish and French):

  • Fluent, near-native English language proficiency is required.
  • Additional language proficiency in French and Spanish is preferred.


Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Good practical and organizational skills with the ability to solve problems
  • Attention to detail, reliability, excellent time-keeping skills, punctuality, independence, motivation and ability to multitask in a busy environment.
  • Knowledge of film history and technologies, video formats and digital formats, scanning, storage
  • Knowledge of film and video preservation and archiving
  • Skill in composing correspondence and reports to summarize training sessions
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with archives, trainers, political offices
  • Ability to work with a wide range of different cultures and an ability to be aware of differing political climates
  • Expertise in 35mm /16mm film, print inspection and repair
  • Video format knowledge and playback equipment
  • Understanding of Digital technologies and emerging issues
  • Computer skills required in versatile programs and platforms
  • Confidence in public speaking and excellent communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, even under pressure
  • Good understanding of technical developments in both film and digital formats
  • Ability to work flexibly within a small team which is part of a much larger organization
  • Successful fundraising and grant writing skills and/ or knowledge of funding opportunities.


D. Employment Status

 

The position is initially offered for a period of 16 months, from 1 September 2016 to until 31 December 2017. The ongoing work will be contingent on the successful fundraising that will continue to support the position and the program. A thorough evaluation of the first phase of the Program should be conducted by the Coordinator in conjunction with the Senior Administrator and the FIAF Executive Committee at least one month before the end of this 16-month period.

The position is offered on a part-time basis and is funded for a total of 60 days per year on a freelance basis, initially with a plan of a time frame requirement of one day per week, with increased working days required around the times of the actual training programs and on-site visits.


E. Location

 

The position is not geographically dependent – the successful applicant is not required to live in Brussels where the FIAF Secretariat is located, as the job may be done remotely while working in close contact with the FIAF Senior Administrator via email, phone and Skype for much of the year. The job requires travel to on site locations for training events and consultation visits as they are scheduled.
